Australia has more than 850 species of birds including migrants. Of these about 630 species occur in Queensland. The Wet Tropics and Cairns region alone is home to over 430 species of birds, 12 of which are endemic to the Wet Tropics. All 12 of these endemics can be found in the Julatten and Mt Lewis area.

Your guide, Doug Herrington, has a great passion for the birds of Tropical Australia and has more than 18 years experience birding Julatten and the surrounding areas. He gets great pleasure from sharing his experiences with other birders. Birdwatching Tropical Australia is based in the Julatten / Port Douglas area about 1 hour’s scenic drive north of Cairns.

The Julatten area includes a large range of very different habitats from wet and dry sclerophyll forest, high altitude rainforest, several wetlands and open farmland. In addition the coastal areas near Port Douglas include lowland rainforest, sandy beaches and rocky shoreline as well as mangrove lined estuaries. All of these provide superb birding habitat. Tours include birding Julatten, Mt Lewis, and the Port Douglas coastal areas, as well as the savannah area between Mareeba and Mt Carbine.

Birdwatching Tropical Australia specialises in one and multi-day individual and small group birding tours. We like to go where the birds are. Beginners, experienced birders and  bird photographers are all catered for. Routes can be adjusted to suit particular interests and needs such as those with a target list. Doug is a keen amateur bird photographer and all the photographs on this website were taken by him whilst birding in the local area.
